Island Sting by Bonnie J. Doerr is an adventure as well as an educational story for children. Kenzie moves to Florida Keys with her divorced mother. While Maggie gets on with her job as a nurse, Kenzie has been allotted the job of unpacking their suitcases and other duties, but she finds herself being drawn to the endangered Key Deer. She realizes that someone is poaching and killing the miniature Key Deer. She is hell bent on finding out the identity of the poacher and it leads her to the local anti deer-poaching operation team. She meets Angelo, who is equally passionate about finding out the identity of the poacher. Will they succeed in their mission?
The plot weaves mystery, adventure and environmentalism effortlessly together in the author's expert story-telling. The book explores the beauty of nature and the overall life around the Key Deer. The author captures the ambiance and the images of the place with her writing, making it visual. Kenzie is an adorable girl and she remains in the minds of readers with her love for nature and animals. Kenzie's love for animals sees her putting her own life at risk to save them. Readers see a lot of emotions in this engaging story as it progresses. The story has a bit of everything - mystery, suspense, adventure, teenagers and the Florida Keys setting, which helps readers connect well with the book. The author's love of the environment and nature is evident in the plot.
