"Inviting Danger", by Robert Goluba, is a Christian suspense novel with a social issues theme. Author Goluba has crafted a compelling story about a former corrections officer named Rey Mendoza whose idea of prison reform is tested when his new job requires him to invite a dangerous inmate into his home. This wouldn't be so bad given his experience in corrections, but his wife and children are in the home, too. Though this places them at risk, Mendoza is willing to take a chance on testing his theories of inmate rehabilitation while at the same time practicing what he believes--Biblical principles of forgiveness and second chances. What unfolds is a story that you can't predict.
The author created an original idea that seems fresh. It isn't something you read about every day, and the circumstances leave you curious about what you would do if you were in his and his family's shoes. Goluba has a talent for putting you into the scenes with him, and he makes the characters come to life. He also brings you into his family, and you experience the danger right along with them. I like that he wrote Mendoza as a regular person of faith, not a super-Christian who does everything perfectly or by ritual. He gets the important things right--forgiveness, do unto others as you would have them do unto you, etc. I like that he used faith as a plot device, but it isn't overwrought. I don't think this book would have worked without it. if it's a good story with an interesting premise and faith-based plot you're after, you have to check out "Inviting Danger", by Robert Goluba.
