Invisible Magic Wand to the Rescue (narrated by Eric Wickstrom) is a story of magic for the elementary school crowd. Rafael Jacimin’s engaging tale of magic wands, waffles, and an earthquake begins over the breakfast table, when Grandpa makes waffles for Caspian and his sister Belinda for the former’s un-birthday. Caspian uses his invisible magic wand to slow down time while he eats, allowing his mouth to luxuriate longer with the flavor of the waffles and syrup. Belinda becomes jealous and demands that Grandpa give her an invisible magic wand like her brother’s, which Grandpa promptly does. In the middle of the wand-naming ceremony (you have to name them, you know,) trouble in the form of an earthquake tests Belinda, her wand, and her ability to think on her feet right away.
While I am not a part of the target readership for Invisible Magic Wand to the Rescue, I predict that children will enjoy both the story and the charming 3D graphic illustrations by Nicolas Milan. Mr. Jacimin is to be commended for writing a story that is exciting without being scary, quirky enough for young children, but simple enough for them to follow. Better still, he encourages his readers to use their imaginations to make invisible magic wands of their own and dream up stories to go with them. If you read Invisible Magic Wand to the Rescue to your kids, I think you’ll find that they want you to read them more stories from Rafael Jacimin.
