Into the Sun by AJ Rice is a gorgeous offering for poetry fans, a collection that features poems exploring both intimate and universal themes. Filled with powerful imagery evocative of the seasons of time and the climates of the soul, Rice's poetry captures the pulsations of the human spirit as it contemplates life, feels the pain of its existence, endures the absurdity of the everyday conundrum while clinging to a fragile hope. In this collection, the author uses the four seasons to portray the emotions of the personae and to draw symbols that speak powerfully to the human experience.
One of my favorite poems in the collection is "Autumn" and the experience of contact with nature, as commonplace as it seems, carries great weight.
"Wandering in a vast forest
Looking up at the evergreens
Listening to their leaves sputter
And whistle in the autumn breeze
Sitting still on a grassy spot
Feeling the brisk air in the shade
Restlessly watching the trees
Waiting for the leaves to change"
Rice's poetry is original and the simplicity in style combines with the author's keen sense of narration to create a work that is delightful to read. In this collection, readers will find powerful resonances of their human experience, of the wistful hours of the day, and the hope that is communicated through the seasons. Themes of change, hope, the human condition, nature, and many others are deftly treated in Into the Sun. A book of poetry filled with gems to stir the heart to wonder.
