There are so many things that I would like to say about this novel. First of all, kudos to the writer for creating a character that people can connect with. Many people are reclusive and introverts and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. We are what we are and it does not matter to the people who really love us. That said, I liked the fact that the author had a no holds barred approach to this topic. I found Clive intriguing. He was charming, shy, and even very up front. His character shows that being different is not bad; it is actually a part of your charm. A good read.

Both characters appear to enjoy traveling, and being tucked away from everyday society in the home Mary inherited from her deceased parents. Clive is faced with many opportunities to change plans and take side deals, and he wants no part of the corruption. The relationship between Mary and her sister is destroyed when she speaks about the integrity of her husband, Clive. As the story progressed, Mary's health took a turn for the worst, and she ultimately died. This pushes Clive over the edge and into the unknown. After the death of his wife, he adopts a destructive attitude and kills a guy, which results in his incarceration. Clive has a hopeless existence after he is released back into society where he starts to become "normal" again. He finds hope as he reintegrates into society, only to find out that the son of his current girlfriend doesn't want him around.

The story was detailed, easy to read and understand, even though it has so many twists and turns that it keeps the reader wondering what will happen next. The story gave a good background of the relationship between the couple, who seem to be laid back, open and, most importantly, content with their lives. The pressures presented to Clive and Mary while trying to live a life of good values and morals made me upset because these types of things happen in reality. Clive was satisfied with his life before all the offers of corruption and malice started to intertwine into his daily business. By the end of the story, I had an overflow of emotions which included happiness, anger, shock, and hopefulness. Other readers will also appreciate this story of a wholesome couple destroyed by the greed of others.

As the ugly part of modern society drives people to retreat into their own bubbles, more people decide to stay away. This is especially true in the Western world where there is a general feeling that one can create and control their own world. The question is: could it be possible for man, a social animal, to live like an island. Sava Buncic, I surmise, lets his readers answer the question themselves.
