With only a few moments’ warning, Jayne must be ready to avoid eye contact, lest she be sucked into a vivid vision of a stranger’s death. As her precautions fail and Jayne’s frustration grows, she lashes out at the strange woman who always comes with the visions… and for the first time gets a chance at understanding the question that has always haunted her. The first book of Tamara Hart Heiner’s Goddess of Fate series, Inevitable, broaches the malleability of fate and the lengths to which one girl will go to change a terrible future.
With a powerful opening and an intriguing premise, Inevitable is sure to hook you from the first page. Heiner weaves an intricate plot, with payoffs that are often surprising and satisfying in equal measure. Jayne’s Sight is given all the attention it deserves. Inevitable would be a much weaker work if her visions weren’t so vivid. Even knowing a vision is coming, the experience is still enough to shake you. Each one is encompassing and each leaves a residual ache long after it is over. Heiner’s craftsmanship here is compelling. I appreciated that Jayne’s best friend, Dana, had such depth rather than being a rich girl stock character, which is a trap that often ensnares authors. Heiner took such care with Dana and Jayne’s connection, really building and emphasizing the girls’ friendship. It helped me to understand why Jayne feels tempted to share her secret with Dana rather than resting solely on the friendship prior to the events of Inevitable. Heiner makes it feel so natural, and that is to be commended.
