In Pursuit of the Giant Sable Antelope is a young adult adventure by John Manuel. It's 1975. Walker Scoville is an eighteen-year-old American on the trip of a lifetime. Walker and his four friends are on an African safari with English wildlife photographer Cecil Covington. After arriving in Cape Town, the boys get their first look at the country's apartheid situation. The little group hires the services of a local driver named Patrick Hangula and begins their tour of South West Africa from Victoria Falls, encountering several exotic animals along the way, at times putting their own lives in danger. Meanwhile, the Angolan Civil War is brewing, yet Cecil is determined to travel to the border to shoot the first photograph of the giant sable antelope. Will he succeed? Will Walker and his friends be safe?
John Manuel takes readers on a wild African safari in the mid-1970s with an eclectic group of people. In Pursuit of the Giant Sable Antelope is a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of the Angolan Civil War. Manuel integrates real-world historical events into a gripping narrative that always keeps you on the edge of your seat. Walker and his friends form a dynamic group, and their adventures always have a sense of looming danger whether from wild animal attacks or at the risk of getting caught amid different fighting sections during one of the most volatile periods of South West African history. Cecil is a flawed man with a point to prove. Toward the end, I did end up sympathizing with his plight. In conclusion, this book is for readers who love coming-of-age tales or realistic adventure stories.
