When FBI agent Gary Hayes is assigned to investigate a tip on a terrorist threat, his probe sends him from Paris to Mexico, but it doesn’t take long before he and his tech partner, Mark, realize that the tips and their sources aren’t pointing them where they expected to go. The original tipper, Mysha, whom Gary meets in Paris, fears for her mother, hates her abusive, evil father and singles him out as a terrorist. Gary and Mark’s search for her father, Farid Shakra, finds them locating four bombs he has placed underwater in concrete chambers. If the bombs were to detonate, the destruction would be massive and come with a cost to thousands of Americans. They do finally catch up with Farid but the encounter lands Gary in the hospital. Does the story end there? Not at all. Once Gary is out of the hospital, the plot zips along taking most unexpected turns and sending readers on a wild ride to a most unexpected conclusion.
When you’re an avid reader of suspense thrillers, every so often you welcome a short gripping story that moves along quickly because it doesn’t go more deeply than necessary into the characters and doesn’t bog the action down with lengthy descriptions. If you’re looking for a story like that, Implied Fear by Terry Haney is the book for you. After I read a book and before I write a review, I make a habit of checking out the author’s credentials. Learning that Terry Haney is a former Air Force nuclear-weapons specialist and that “his training and travel have enhanced his perspective of what threats are possible” made it easy to accept as credible what almost seems incredible at times. Bottom line: where so many terrorist threat stories get bogged down in too many heavy details that go over the average reader’s head, Terry Haney’s Implied Fear is quick, engrossing and enjoyable. A good read.
