Sixteen-year-old Marcie's life isn't exactly normal. Her mother walked out on the family when she was twelve, her younger brother has become a neat freak, and her father's new girlfriend isn't exactly the "motherly" type. To top it off, her best friend has a secret and her mother has just announced she's getting married. When tragedy strikes the family, Marcie is forced to make some pretty tough decisions, decisions that could change her and her family's lives forever. Love, teen angst, family problems, and plenty of drama...this novel by Julie Harford definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat!
If You Could Only Choose Your Mother is a wonderful story with an intense plot that always keeps you guessing, strong characters, and a very relatable theme. Young adults will dive into this funny, heartwarming tale. Marcie, the main character, is very relatable, having gone through what many teenagers have also experienced. The progression of Marcie throughout the novel keeps the reader on their toes, never wanting to put it down! Although this book is a little darker than most enjoyable teen reads, I still recommend it to everyone because of its realistic nature and the bleak clarity of what's happening in the plot. Marcie's story is intense, sad, and powerful enough to make you feel for her along with the other characters. However, if you have a problem with mild language, alcohol and drug references, or sexual situations, this book isn't for you, as there is an appearance of each of these at least once throughout the novel.
