If We Don’t by Jordie Cole is a dystopian novel that follows the life of Issa Cruz. It is an exciting and heartbreaking story about a young man who is thought to be the prophesied one. He is believed to be the boy who will lead his downtrodden northern brethren against the dreaded south that has locked them out of safety and security for generations, forcing them to live day by day and scrape by to survive the horrendous treatment by a group that they know only as “The Troops”.

If We Don’t is written in the third-person, describing the journey of Issa Cruz as he goes from being a young boy learning to deal with loss to a teenager leading his people and finally a young man who is simply doing his best to fight against a system that would prefer him ignoring the issues he is trying to repair. The story by Jordie Cole is well written and fairly fast-paced, each chapter titled with the boy's age, giving you a clear idea of how his mentality evolves as we progress through the story. Issa is a likable personality, and it is easy to feel for him, as are the supporting characters comprising his family and friends. While similar to some well-known and popular dystopian novels in concept, this has an original backstory and cast that will keep you interested in the adventures of this young man and his desperate attempts to save his people. This makes it a fantastic book to pick up for any fans of the genre.
