If We Break Up by Cheyanne Young is a young adult novel about one teenager's struggle to find her individuality. Honey Blackwell's life has already been planned by her parents, who had the perfect high school romance and lived happily ever after. She's expected to go to A&M, marry her high school sweetheart, and work at the family real estate agency, all just like her parents. While everyone else seems perfectly happy with this plan, Honey isn't so sure. Lucas doesn't even seem that appealing anymore, and Honey has just been accepted into her dream college in Colorado. To prove that they are (or are not) soulmates, Lucas agrees to a temporary break-up, so that he and Honey can go on five dates before the end of their senior year and figure out whether or not they truly belong together. Honey quickly learns two things: 1. finding dates is harder than it sounds, and 2. she might be interested in the last person she expected.

With the perfect combination of romance, anti-romance, and teen angst, If We Break Up is a delightfully wonderful coming-of-age tale that touches upon some of the not-so-wonderful, life-altering decisions that many young adults are faced with, whether or not they are ready for those decisions. Cheyanne Young paints the picture of a fascinating main character who is easy to relate to, with her feelings of powerlessness and lack of control over her own life, as she is torn between making herself happy and making everyone around her happy. The supporting characters are also fun and unique, and I love the variety and diversity of characters that are represented. Honey's mother and the relationship that the two of them had especially struck a chord with me; though it was a relatively minor part of the plot, it was written and presented in an extremely beautiful way. I look forward to reading more from Cheyanne Young in the future.
