I Love You Like That: A Novel by Heather Cumiskey is the second novel in a series about a young girl who finds that loving someone is not as easy as it is said. Hannah was just trying to get back on her feet after her boyfriend Deacon died. Devastated and lost, she has no idea what she is doing and what the repercussions of her actions would be. She falls into the hands of some very bad people and now she does not have any way out. Her mother is no help due to her addiction, her father is no support, and it seems as if she and her sister are now on their own. Unbeknownst to her, Deacon is alive but has struggles of his own. He woke up in a strange hospital and now he seems to be at the center of a federal sting operation. How can he get out this mess alive? He has no idea, but he knows that he wants to stay alive and get to Hannah as soon as possible. Will they ever be able to meet again? Will their love survive this all?
This young adult novel was full of surprises. I was not expecting the story to be this intricate and so detailed. The author added tiny details that later turned out to be big plot turning points. The fast pace of the story made it more interesting, while the amazing character development left me pleasantly surprised. I was glad to see how mature Hannah was by the end of the novel and how almost calm Deacon was. They grew up a lot, but they did so well. Hannah became confident by the end and Deacon learned to be humble. They made a great pair; they gave life to the story and I enjoyed every moment of it. A very welcoming and soothing novel to read.
