I AM is a hard-hitting and expressive work of poetry, collected and composed by author Amanda de Geneste. Written for adult readers, the book specifically focuses on sexual situations regarding child molestation and abuse and therefore contains explicit language and graphic references. A difficult read in terms of its subject matter, the author transforms the experience into poetic expression in order to convey hidden signs of pain and to empathize with fellow victims. With solidarity and healing in mind, these poetic works give way to hope and faith in terms of finding a path to freedom and offer dignity to fellow victims in the empowerment of speaking up and reclaiming their lives.
Author Amanda de Geneste has put forward an incredibly brave work that offers both emotional freedom and truth. Coming from a varied background which includes many years of professional work investigating crimes against children, the author combines her own deeply personal experiences with those other voices that she has related to and those she has yet to meet. The result is a beautiful expression of imagery that does not hold back when it needs to be explicit, reflecting perfectly the trauma and shock in the moment and the after-effects of abuse. The journey through the different poems is exceedingly well-paced, and readers who make it all the way to the end will find a light at the end of the tunnel and verses of renewed strength and hope. Overall, I would highly recommend I AM for readers seeking an outlet or solidarity on abuse, and those who wish to learn more closely what it is to be a victim and to heal.
