I Am POUG by Kellan Lamberti is not just a story for children. It is a wonderful perspective to help adults of any age who have had to face or who are facing what the author experienced growing up. The strength of this story is that it allows readers to experience life from Kellan’s perspective from a young age. By doing so, they see how difficult it is even for well-meaning parents to understand the true nature of their children’s gender. In addition, they also appreciate how hard it is for children to understand their true genders and to shield themselves from all the expectations of family and friends and other concerned individuals.
I Am POUG by Kellan Lamberti should be seen as required reading for all teachers and parents of young children. It is also a book that needs to be placed on the reading table in school libraries so that it is accessible to children. Once they start reading it, they will better understand how they are made up and perhaps be motivated to take the steps necessary to let their parents know and avoid spending so much of their lives trying to be someone they are not. The illustrations are well done and the book cover is attractive and exceptionally on point. I liked the impressionist feel of many of the pictures, as this style is perfect for the theme of the book. This is an enlightening and sincere book that explores what being a Person Of Unknown Gender (POUG) involves. To all who encounter this review, I urge you to read this book and share it where you perceive it can help children to be the beautiful human beings they are, in all their infinite variety.
