Every part of our bodies, inside and out, is only a small portion of what we really are. We might have feet, but that’s not who we are, even though our feet are very important to us. The same applies to our knees, arms, nose, ears, hair and even our heart. We are everything all at once, and we might experience hurt in these parts, but we are not one single part of the body. We are whole, “wonderful, amazing, and beautiful beyond words. I am the strong, confident, victorious person living inside my body.” Powerful words, but oh so true.
Robert Sky Allen’s picture book story, I Am Not A Foot, is a poignant way to introduce young readers about the importance of being themselves and being the strong, confident person they were meant to be. Children (and people of all ages) need stimulation and encouragement to achieve their full potential, for we are all more than just one part of our bodies. The language used is simple and repetitive so the young reader will quickly catch onto the fact that they are not their feet, their knees, their arms, their tummy, etc. Someone else might be able to step on a foot or poke a tummy, but that someone else would never be able to step on or poke the entire ‘me’.
In an age of bullying and multiple types of abuse, it’s important for everyone to appreciate their whole self and this is clearly, and cleverly, laid out in this gem of a book, I Am Not A Foot by Robert Sky Allen. The colorful illustrations help move the young reader forward from one part of the body to the next until the end, which concludes quite aptly with the power of all parts working together: the power of being ‘me’. Excellent resource and fun to read, too.
