Hunting and Fishing for Kids by Terri Kovalcik is a short book for middle graders, with several loosely related tales of hunting and fishing adventures. Some of these tales also include a brief bit of factual information about whichever species was featured. In many respects, these are the types of stories that get rehashed around the campfire throughout the country during the various hunting seasons. In each of these tales, a young hunter or angler successfully harvests the game species of interest, generally with a single shot and always with a humane kill. There is no blood and gore of any type in these tales, just a matter-of-fact recitation of the tales in which fathers and their children are together out-of-doors.
Hunting and Fishing for Kids is an upbeat, entertaining look at how life unfolds for families who continue to uphold the hunting tradition. The peaceful serenity to be found described herein evokes many memories of similar excursions from my own past, as it no doubt will do with other readers. The smiles of joy on the faces of the youngsters depicted in these stories will conjure up recollections of comparable smiles, while presenting a hunting trip adventure as being a greatly enjoyable event in the life of a youngster. Hunting and Fishing for Kids is well-written in easy-to-read language suitable for middle grade students. Ethics and personal responsibility are likewise strongly tied to the hunting experiences mentioned in the stories, as they should be. This is a short story collection I wish every child in the civilized world could experience. I don’t have quite that reach, so I’ll just suggest it for your children. They should enjoy the stories, even if you never take them hunting or fishing.
