How to Teach Your Children About Racism: A Letter from a Black Mother to White Parents is a work of non-fiction concerning social and cultural themes around race and ethnicity, and was penned by author Uchenna L. Umeh, MD, MBA. In this very important and concise guidebook, the pertinent issue of racism is brought to the forefront and highlighted for those in particular who may experience very little of it and not understand its real implications in the wider world. Dr. Umeh presents an eye-opening and accessible way to see how black people are often devalued and terribly judged for little more than the color of their skin, and how we can all take steps to help the next generation do better than their predecessors.
Author Uchenna L. Umeh has crafted a must-read in the new canon of the literature following the death of George Floyd and so many others like him who faced institutionalized racism and lost their lives to it. Dr. Umeh’s discussion of these issues is beautifully crafted to deliver not only a highly educated sociocultural perspective, but the real story of a black immigrant mother who has been through the fears of living in America whilst these terrible injustices in the system remain firmly in place. The 21 commandments within this book provide insightful and valuable advice for every single person that is highly effective and actually very easy to follow if we are all committed to a vision of true equality in the future. Overall, I would highly recommend How to Teach Your Children About Racism for everyone everywhere to read.
