How To Be Owned By A Cat is a helpful guide for potential cat owners, written by Kate C. From expectation to reality, Kate C. details each step of her experience in deciding how and whether or not to adopt. While theory differs vastly from reality, fur-master of the house, Theodore, teaches Kate the basics of how humans should behave and what a cat expects from them. Lack of privacy is something any cat owner needs to get used to from the very moment they bring their feline into its new forever home, as cats believe that anything and everything they see, including their human, actually belongs to them and needs to be by their side, at their beck and call. Theodore’s delightful journey with Kate is something any cat lover would easily be able to engage with... stray cat hairs and all.
As a veterinary nurse, I most definitely have to say that Kate C. has certainly done her homework, while also adjusting to life beautifully as a cat owner. The advice she gives, sometimes with humorous anecdotes attached, is well worth adhering to. It is important that pet owners recognize that owning a cat and owning a dog are two entirely different ball games; dog owners will quickly learn this, as cats have a low tolerance for humans who do not treat them like royalty. Having been owned by many cats over the past 30 years, I couldn’t help but giggle in some places while reading about both Kate’s and Theodore’s experiences as they come into one another’s life. Seasoned cat owners will find much of Kate’s narrative to be a tad amusing (eg. constant invasion of privacy when she goes to the toilet), as they are easily able to picture it happening many times over with their own fluff balls.
The DIY areas of the book are brilliant and an absolute must, especially for those owners who live in high-rise buildings or want their cat to have access to the outdoors. I very much enjoyed Kate's and Theodore’s extreme adjustments as they become a part of one another’s lives, and highly recommend How To Be Owned By A Cat to all would-be cat owners as a warning and a lesson that humans don’t own cats... they own you from day one, hands down.
