Hot Dogs: A Lord Tyee Mystery is a sleuth mystery novel written by Kaimana Wolff and Lord Tyee. Caryn was trouble. Lord Tyee knew instantly when she was coming, and he knew she could be relied upon to bring more trouble. His distrust of her was not unwarranted. Caryn thought of herself as a dog walker, and would pick up her clients’ dogs and transport them in her van to the local dog park. What her clients didn’t know was that she had, at least on one occasion that Lord Tyee knew about, left her charges locked in the van with insufficient ventilation. Lord Tyee had been in that van on just such an occasion. He and the dogs were all languishing in the unrelenting heat, and the bone-dry water bowl was nothing more than an unpleasant reminder of their plight. Tyee had realized that he had to do something before he became too weakened by the heat to act, and he had finally managed to open the door and get them all to safety. While Tyee hoped one day to transmit an image of that danger to Pielle, his pack leader, he was determined to do what he could to avoid going in Caryn’s van ever again. When Caryn, some days later, hysterically told Pielle that someone had stolen the dogs from her van, Tyee couldn’t help but fear the worst.
Kaimana Wolff and Lord Tyee’s sleuth murder mystery, Hot Dogs: A Lord Tyee Mystery, will resonate with anyone who’s ever shared their lives with a dog or a wolfdog. I’ve often wondered about wolfdogs and was fascinated by the relationship Pielle and Lord Tyee have. It does seem indeed a step removed from that shared by people and their dogs. Wolff’s story addresses a crucially important issue; one that is especially relevant at this time of year. Cars heat up extraordinarily quickly, and dogs are more prone to heat-induced fatality than most people may realize. Hot Dogs is a fast-paced story that focuses on Tyee’s decision making skills and superior wolf dog thought processes, and reading it was a fascinating experience. The plot is well-crafted; the characters engaging and authentic, and the story works on a number of levels. Hot Dogs: A Lord Tyee Mystery is most highly recommended.
