Hope UnShackled (Redemption Series Volume 2) by Elaine Violette is a historical fiction novel set in the period of the 1850s in America. This was the time when American slavery was an entrenched “institution” in the South and the Fugitive Slave Act had been passed in 1850, which made it a crime to even help or assist runaway slaves. The story is set against this backdrop. Elijah is a runaway slave when we are first introduced to him. Olivia, on the other hand, is a widowed sympathetic mixed-race woman who helps fugitives and runaway slaves. Due to the passing of the Fugitive Slave Act, however, it becomes dangerous both for her and her family when hers and Elijah’s lives intersect. This is their story that tells about the terror, the despair, and the courage shown by the slaves as well as the people who helped them, sometimes at the risk of their own lives.
I really liked Hope UnShackled (Redemption Series Volume 2) and Elaine Violette brings out vividly what it was like to live in those times of slavery in the US. Although this is the second book in the series, it certainly stands independently in its own right and can be read just on its own. I found the story to be engrossing and, once again, the horror and inhumanity of slavery forcefully comes through. This isn’t just a story about slavery, because it is also a love story and a story about family and relationships. Olivia’s character is just wonderfully drawn and so is Elijah. They make the story very real and authentic. This is a great historical fiction read!
