Honor Thy Father by Ellen Fannon is a family saga that spans multiple generations as it explores the broken paths of the Wallace family, whose lives were upended by a series of interconnected events that destroy a home through miscommunication, its demise assured by a tragic vacuum of misunderstanding. Torn apart for reasons all in the family believe are for different reasons, or for no reason at all, readers witness the evolution of characters through the eyes of each family member; the impact of a cataclysmic moment forming lives that have splintered into different directions. The timelines shift into three parts but retain the same message of hope throughout: No matter how rough and muddy the path may feel, God will, in His love and grace, always make sure it leads back to home.
Honor Thy Father is a slow burn written by Ellen Fannon in the style of literary fiction. Still, it is something of a nail-biter, particularly in the first section when Adam is desperately searching for his family, and Connie is on a drunken ledge with nowhere to really go but down. The page-turning continues comfortably because we are able to see and understand the rationale of each character in a definitively character-driven story. This can be equal parts frustrating and satisfying, the former because so often we want to shake Connie and tell everyone else what is going on, and the latter because Fannon teases a full-circle resolution that, in a beautiful but unexpected way, she delivers on. This is Christian fiction with a theme that ripples through, initially nuanced, and then with the strength of a cleansing flood. Give the book some time and a chance, and the heartfelt message will stay with you long after the final page.
