Holiday Antics: As Chicken Man, Pickle Man, and the Rat of Justice by Joseph Lupton is an exciting entry in the Joseph 3-in-1 Superhero Series. Joseph, the protagonist, can transform into Chicken Man, Pickle Man, or the Rat of Justice. As Chicken Man, Joseph faces off against the Gallus Cuisinier, who plans to offer chickens as the main holiday dish. During the Easter holidays, Joseph the Pickle Man must contend with Fufu the Bunny. Fufu was chosen to be the Easter bunny and planned to hurt Pickle Man and his vegetable friends. Finally, the Rat of Justice fights against an interesting array of villains that threaten to ruin Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and the 4th of July for rat-kind. Unfortunately, Joseph can’t seem to have a peaceful holiday.
I enjoyed reading Holiday Antics by Joseph Lupton. I am confident that children will also be intrigued by this book. Joseph encounters similar situations in all three of his superhero transformations. He begins his day watching television and then is coaxed into participating in a holiday-themed activity. However, there is more than enough variation between the villains and their schemes to make each story fun to read. I especially enjoyed reading about Meowsta Claws, the feline counterpart of Santa Claus. His character arc was unexpectedly wholesome. I appreciated how the author incorporated so many made-up things that are pop culture icons. For example, Chicken Man is weak against ‘Chickenite’, which is inspired by Superman’s weakness for Kryptonite. This was a fun read, and I recommend it to everyone.
