Hidden Timbers, the third book in the Scandals trilogy by Gabi Plumm, finds us in the new old age home deep in the heart of Gondwanaland, the most ancient rainforest in the world. Joan Holloway-Potts-Jones has moved from Rosehill Retirement Home and created an eco-friendly lodge far from civilization. A party of tourists avoiding a cassowary on the road plunge their vehicle into a river ravine and two die as they fight to reach safety. They find refuge at Hidden Timbers, but then Cyclone Wilfred blasts through, and the whole structure is demolished. The remaining survivors finally make it to Rosehill, but Joan appears to be suffering from dementia. The residents we met and loved in the first two books are skeptical. Has the man-eating Joan changed, or is she up to her old tricks? Is she still after Dulcie’s husband Frank? Meanwhile, his wife is in a coma close to death in the local hospital. What do they all think of Joan’s new sidekick Mark? Is he really a disciple of the Lord Swami Bagawum, or an imposter? The author ties up all the loose ends in a very satisfactory conclusion.

Author Gabi Plumm has given us another tongue-in-cheek tale of the antics in a North Queensland Australian retirement home. Who could ever imagine the tricks these septuagenarians get up to? Her descriptions of both the car accident and the devastation wreaked by Cyclone Wilfred are brilliantly done. I suspect Plumm has experienced such weather conditions to enable her to transfer the images to paper. As before in this delightful set of books, there is an underlying humor that is delicious. Arch-villain Joan is again center stage, while adorable Dulcie lies at death's door after being hit by flying debris from the storm. There are smiles and tears on every page and this cosy mystery is a joy to read. I had to chuckle at the following description of Joan’s attitude to men. “They were all the same no matter what wrapper they came in.” A recommended book to curl up with on a cold winter’s night.
