“An experienced witch does not rely on karma.” Hex: The Apprentice is a children's adventure by Fran Hodgkins. Robin West knew her grandmother was an artist, but discovering Gram Madder is a Hexmeister, carrying on an ancient family tradition of making hexes for customers, comes as a surprise. She becomes Gram’s apprentice and realizes her unique gift to make positive changes in people’s lives or prevent things from occurring. A strange preacher comes to town, ranting how evil hexes are, and there are persons in Robin’s community who believes she and Gram are witches too. Gram and Robin know they must be cautious, especially when a few of Robin’s schoolmates turn against her, and the herbalist’s barn is destroyed. A neighbor’s recurring dreams of future disaster worries Robin, who wonders if there is a hex large enough to stop the danger, or the troublemakers who will ruin her family.
Hex: The Apprentice contained the right amount of magical charms to keep me spellbound. Although I knew what a hex was, I didn’t know how it worked and that special ingredients and materials are used in making one. Fran Hodgkins provided thorough information on this topic in an entertaining way so I learned a lot. The story also emphasizes the importance of loyalty, kindness, and the value of friendship. The different characters are all noteworthy, but I am most fond of Gran Madder. Robin is a lovely teen, as is her friend Pita. Hex is highly recommended.
