Herd of Tusks by Lobibah Oji Baraka is a general collection of poems. Herd of Tusks contains a lot of poems that span across various genres. They include themes that are widespread and pervade many areas of life as well as emotions and feelings across the human spectrum. Although Herd of Tusks can be classified as general poetry, there is a slight tilt towards black empowerment which includes black female power, changing African-American stereotypes, and some aspects that are sometimes associated with black culture, especially in America such as jazz, rap, an overall appreciation of music and dance, among others. I found this refreshing and enjoyed that sense of camaraderie and that sense one gets through the poems that we are all connected as a human race and the need is always to make the future as harmonious as possible.

Herd of Tusks by Lobibah Oji Baraka is a good collection of poetry and the poems are spirited and well developed. Lobibah obviously writes with a sense of abandon at times that comes through and I got the sense while reading some of the poems that he is literally putting to paper anything and everything that is going through his mind in a candid expression of words. Some of the pieces I liked the most are Little Things, Shoulders of Twilight, Morning Poem, Little Black Girls, The Guesser and the Stranger, etc. Little Black Girls is especially nice as it seems to depict both the innocence and power of childhood. This is a good poetry collection.
