Hemingway House by Richard Parise is a funny, unique book. The story takes place in a halfway house for the mentally challenged. The narrator, Richard Raymonds, lives in this house and tells stories that have occurred with the other residents. The stories in Hemingway House are based on actual events and, after reading them, I believe that every story actually happened. The stories are too zany not to have occurred. I also found it funny that my first thought while reading Hemingway House was that if Richard is a resident of this house how is he able to write about the events that happened? It was as if Parise read my mind and answered that very question in chapter eight.
The narrative style of the stories is relaxed and I felt as if Richard was sitting next to me, whispering in my ear, instead of me actually reading the book. All of the characters are lovable. The character Amy Preachy reminded me of my Aunt Tootsie. If they ever met they would have to compare notes on where the oddest place they wrote “Jesus Lives” was. My favorite character was Phillip Duclose because he reminded me of a puppy that accidentally tinkles everywhere. I enjoyed reading Hemingway House and seeing how the lives of the residents in the halfway house were. Parise has offered me a glimpse of a life I never knew about. This is a good book to read if you are curious about how other people live.
