I just finished reading Hearing God & Slaying Giants In Your Career by Darryl Brumfield. I must say that rarely have I read any book with a more masterful and useful message about God, principles, faith, and purpose than this one. There is so much wisdom in this book that it staggers the mind. Here is a quote from the Acknowledgements: “To be a man you have to see a man; I saw you and I am better for it.” When I read this, I knew I was reading something special and that I needed to pay attention to this writer so that I could learn and grow. Darryl Brumfield had grabbed my attention and respect before I had even started chapter one, and he kept both throughout the whole book. I have always seen the connection between work and self-respect. American men and the men of many other countries often measure the success of their life and self-worth through their job performance.
I have often failed to know where to place God into the equation of work, family, and purpose. Darryl Brumfield has shown me how. This review is as much a thank you as it is a message to others that you really should read this book, especially if you are a Christian and struggling with how to keep God in the forefront as you juggle career, family, and social obligations. Hearing God & Slaying Giants will help you. Darryl uses the biblical story of David and Goliath as a metaphor for the problems we face in our modern lives. It works because it is a timeless example of the power of faith.
