Healing Hearts: Overcoming Grief and Loss by Nancy Ejike-Offor is comforting and soothing to the mind, heart, and soul. The author introduces the five stages in dealing with loss and grief as set forth by Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and finally Acceptance. As a retired registered nurse, I knew these stages. As a bereaved mother of two boys in heaven, I knew these stages. Yet I chose to read and review this book because there is always something new to learn and help with the loss of a loved one, a pet, a job, a home, one’s partner/spouse, and any loss that affects one’s life. I found this book impactful in many ways. The five stages of loss do not fit everyone. One person might skip a stage, and others might go in a different order. Yet others might go back and forth in these stages.

Knowing and understanding these stages can help a person understand why they feel the way they do after a loss. Written in an orderly and easily read fashion, this book contains Bible verses that give comfort and speak to the soul in dealing with loss. Faith is powerful. Does the author write from a Christian point of view? Yes, but she includes most faiths around the world, adding pieces that can assist anyone to help another person in understanding how their faith is different, yet they can still help others with their loss. Children and teenagers deal with loss differently, and they must have their feelings validated. Planting flowers or a tree in honor of the loved one is healthy, and Nancy Ejike-Offor includes many positive ways in which to aid moving forward after a loss. Making sure to take care of oneself is a huge part of dealing with any type of loss, as included in Healing Hearts.
