Have You Seen These Children? A Memoir by Veronica Slaughter is a heartrending memoir written from the perspective of an eight-year-old who, along with her siblings, Valorie, Vance, and Vincent, went on a journey that changed their lives forever. The book is about how misguided information followed by their mother backfired and how their lives took a bad turn from that of being perfect. Their decision to be there for each other, no matter what, defines the power of prayers, family bonding, and their will to survive. The contrasting images of love, family bonding, stability, and happiness are woven with instability, separation, and deception and show readers the fragility and complexities of human lives. The story will help many readers out there to face their fears from a place of love that will help them heal many of their wounds.
Have You Seen These Children? is raw and heartbreaking, and Veronica Slaughter is honest and transparent while sharing the story of her life. It is a story of self-discovery, pain, love, family bonding, and healing that shows readers how love and kindness to self and others are of paramount importance. The author's story will make readers think about the challenges and adversities life can throw at them and what stands out is the way the family dealt with it without losing hope. Their move from Cebu to America and life there, which was completely different from that of Cebu, and then moving back to Cebu has been discussed in detail. Their move back to America after that was even worse when the four children were put into St. Clara's Orphanage, and not knowing where their mother was is painful to read. The pain and trauma they have undergone are unimaginable, and each one's story is poignant. The story of these four kids, Valerie, Veronica, Vance, and Vincent, show the atrocities committed by people who were family. Their stories of drugs, alcohol, and obsessions have also been shared but what is most inspiring is their story of trying to heal by giving to others.
