The creepy sounds and shadows that only seem to occur at night have really started to take their toll. Haunted House: Day & Night by Jaybie D. follows Mandy as she tries to overcome her fears by taking a trip with her family to a haunted house. Mandy could really do without the spooky sounds and shadows every night, and she sure wasn’t looking forward to going to the haunted house. It all seemed as if it could go wrong, but once they arrived and got to see all the work that was put in behind the scenes, Mandy’s fears started to lessen, and instead, she found herself feeling excited.
I found Haunted House by Jaybie D. to be a really interesting story, and I loved the motivation behind it, which is to show children that there is nothing to be afraid of at night. More often than not, kids are afraid of the dark or the unknown, and this book very clearly addresses that issue through Mandy. By showing children that there is nothing to fear and that even a haunted house isn’t really all that scary, I think it will help lessen the fears of children. The story in itself is also really creative, and I think the illustrations were really beautiful. They complemented the story and its overall tone, adding to the book as a whole. Taking something that children know to be scary and showing them the ways in which it isn’t will really help them overcome fears and grow emotionally.
