When I started reading Hateful Burden - Book One of the Carrier Trilogy by Natalie Gibson, I was immediately drawn into the world of Ramillia, who is the main character of the story as well as the narrator of most of the book. She wakes up strapped to a table in an asylum and has no idea how and why she got there. The reader learns that she suffers from gaps in her memory and that everyone else thinks Ramillia murdered her parents (which she did but she can't remember). The only ray of light during her imprisonment are letters from Julian, who wants to marry her. However, getting out of the asylum doesn't happen the way she'd imagined and once out of there, her life doesn't exactly turn into a dream – more like a nightmare. She slowly starts to understand things about her past and what caused the gaps in her memory, and that not everyone who claims to love her really does.
It is obvious that the author did quite some reading about the time period in which the story takes place as the little details are believable and create a coherent world. It's a joy to read the descriptions because clearly Natalie Gibson put care and attention into everything – from the characters to their dresses and their surroundings. Sometimes the descriptions of actions in the book can be quite disturbing but in a rather delightful way (if that's not too strange to say!). The story moves from one point to the next fluidly, and keeps you interested in what will happen next. The story isn't predictable and is very entertaining.
