Hatch! is a children’s animal picture book written by Cassie Hoyt and illustrated by Amanda Crawford Brown. What mysteries are contained in eggs! They are all mostly round or ovoid, and the moment that a creature will emerge from an egg is usually preceded by a tiny movement, then a few cracks in the hitherto smooth and unbroken surface. When kids think of eggs and what will hatch from them, they generally think of chickens and ducks. If they are lucky, they’ll also have seen birds’ nests on tree branches, filled with shiny white, blue or other colored eggs that in a few days are replaced by tiny, funny-looking feathery things with mouths that gape hungrily and peep their demands for food incessantly. But there are so many other unexpected creatures that can hatch from eggs. Could it be a tadpole or a baby turtle? This book celebrates all of them.
Cassie Hoyt’s Hatch! teaches kids about the many different types of animals and insects that hatch from eggs. I love the format of the book which gives readers the opportunity to guess the identity of each hatchling based on clues like location, parental features and egg shape. Amanda Crawford Brown’s watercolor panels are amazing and work so very well to bring out the drama and excitement of the hatching process. Hatch! is one of those kids’ picture books that educates as it entertains, and it does so brilliantly. It’s most highly recommended.
