"Harry the Hairless Wonder Dog" by Melanie Hughes is intended for early elementary children and it appears appropriate to that audience. Harry is a very unusual dog; he has no hair on his body except for a bit on the top of his head. He likes to have his head hair groomed as he becomes the center of attention wherever he goes. His skin is grey and it has pink patches which need to be protected from the sun. Harry wears shirts or sunscreen so that he does not get a sunburn.
Since Harry has no hair, he must bathe daily to remove dirt which might be prevented if he was a hairy dog. This is no problem as Harry absolutely loves his bath. He even puts on lotion to help protect his skin and one time, a new lotion turned him blue! To protect his paws from mud, Harry wears shoes and this draws a lot of attention. Harry can feel things on his skin and he loves to cuddle up in his pajamas and his favorite blanket.
The illustrations in this book are delightful and they definitely pull in the child reader. It helps to attract the child to pets and the book definitely presents a view other than the traditional view of a particular pet. Reading the book may also lead naturally to a discussion of how people also are different and how differences should be respected rather than be made a topic for teasing and/or humiliation.
