Horses have a history that goes way back before humans walked the earth – fifty-five million years ago. Horses have long been an important part of human life. In Mary Chris Foxworthy’s Hark! Follow My Hoofbeats, one present-day Morgan Horse by the name of Hark tells his story and that of his ancestors as the horse we know today evolved from a small, dog-sized forest creature, an Eohippus. Hark takes the reader on a journey through time, introducing the horses of ancient times and the Middle Ages, right up to the present day. Hark discusses his breed and shares some of his grand adventures as a domesticated animal.
Mary Chris Foxworthy’s story, Hark! Follow My Hoofbeats, is a great tool to teach young readers about the history of the horse. Written in the first person from Hark’s point of view, the story reads like a gentle, very personal retelling of how things developed over time. The language is simple to help youngsters improve their reading skills. Colorful illustrations and photographs complement the narrative. Hark shares stories of the many jobs his ancestors have done over time, from providing a source of milk (yes, horses were milked like cows and still are in some places) to providing transportation to being showpieces like the beautiful Lipizzaners of Vienna, and so much more. The author provides a thorough list of additional resources at the end of the book. Although this is intended as a detailed look at the Morgan Horse breed, it’s also a historical guide to the lengthy and noble ancestry of all horses - a great addition to the Hoofbeats Through History series. Fascinating!
