Hammock Bound by Barbara D. Gaylor is a historical debut like none other. It's the best of 'opposites attract' when a socialite falls in love with a farmer. Their ensuing plight, and struggle just to remain together and in love, is timeless, dynamic, and a story that is sure to touch all hearts and generations. Gaylor writes with the intention of not only telling the story, but of exploring the characters' desires, wants, needs, and plans for their future. While the romance and story of building a life together is key, you really get to know the two as people, which makes you that much more attached to them and ensures that you are entirely invested in their struggles, triumphs, and journey.
Not only was this a sweeping, lyrical tale that explores America in the early 1900s, knowing that it's based on real life makes it that much richer and better. You feel the history, the ancestry just flowing off the pages, making Hammock Bound the next book you absolutely must read this summer. Barbara D. Gaylor has done an excellent job capturing both the essence of her familial story, as well as painting it with a fictional touch to ensure an enjoyable, flowing tale that dabbles in real life issues...some of which have been too long forgotten. Readers of historical fiction, truth based stories, or familial tales will really appreciate Hammock Bound, and will enjoy the gentle, romantic realism that can exist even during times of great struggle and adversity.
