Grouper’s Laws is a work of fiction aimed at new adults and mature young adults, penned by author D. Philip Miller. Set as a coming of age drama in high school in the early 1960s, we find ourselves at Fenton High School with a group of true outsiders. New to the school, Blondie Reimer is quickly recruited into a makeshift club of oddballs who get themselves into the typical scrapes, but here he meets the enigmatic Grouper. Observational and romantic in his outlook, Grouper’s wisdom only carries so far, and Blondie will learn the importance of getting a grip on reality within high school and for the wider world beyond it.
Something like a combination of The Breakfast Club and Dead Poets Society, this coming of age drama takes a look at the romanticized version of high school life, and how such illusions are shattered over time. Author D. Phillip Miller plays with this theme in an intelligent and quirky way as he introduces us to a cast of characters who first appear like archetypes or caricatures, but are slowly cultivated into real people as Blondie gets to know them. The sixties setting is masterfully done as well, rekindling nostalgic life from the time and the simplicity of friendships before the technological world. Yet, at the same time, the typical themes about human connection, first romance, and fitting in are all still there and as relatable as ever. Overall, Grouper’s Laws will bring back memories for some and introduce new ideas and drama to others.
