Green September by Ray Vernon challenges your principles. Major Kevin MacAllister plans to do the unthinkable. After receiving a substantial inheritance from his Great-Uncle Bertie, Kevin’s destiny changes drastically. Not only does his uncle bequeath him money, but in his last will and testament Herbert (Bertie) T.S. MacAllister commissions Kevin to use his knowledge and newly acquired funds to unify Ireland once and for all. Although Kevin MacAllister is a very loyal, high ranking official for the British Ministry of Defense, his devotion to his uncle is resolute. Kevin masterminds a plan and puts together a strange, yet elite team to commit an act of treason, a horrific mission of terror. Operation Green September is a go – Kevin MacAllister plans nuclear blackmail.
Ray Vernon uses his Irish heritage as a foundation to pen Green September. The love of Ireland is woven throughout the plot; each word written is a thread of devotion. The characterization of the novel is well developed. The diverse cast of personalities creates depth and insight into the mind, heart, and soul of the main character. I loved the role of Max; there is something about adding a dog into the cast of characters that makes a book more enjoyable. Vernon’s narrative challenges morality, ethics, and patriotism. The age-old question within the plot is can two wrongs make a right? Will one violent act stop the wave of violence that has occurred for decades? Even though Vernon creates an amiable character, Kevin MacAllister is a terrorist. Intermingled within this major conflict are mini conflicts or tugs of war of conscience.
The plot covers all the bases: politics, military, family devotion, and the media. The retracing of time from chapter to chapter causes the plot action to surge and then ebb slightly. Through the denouement the suspense mounts, keeping you engaged and on the edge until the very end. As the narrative concludes, the story of Kevin MacAllister is far from over. You are left wondering what will happen next.
