In Great Explorers: Observing Nature Through Sights and Sounds, Kara A. Mullane and Brie Bagwell give us an entertaining and educational book about science that is targeted at children ages three to six. It introduces the skill of observation, a basic step in the scientific method, as a game of exploration. Emmi is a curious child who enjoys seeing and listening to what is around her. She shares her observations with other children and adults and learns the concept of perspective. One of the adults is blind but shares what he hears, demonstrating that everyone can be an explorer. The illustrations are sure to engage young children and provide many opportunities for adults to discuss with them how we can observe sights and sounds in nature.
