Gravity’s Embrace: A True, Unsolved Mystery Surrounding an Alaskan Pilot by Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Young Fackrell is a true story about her younger brother, Timothy Young, a 32-year-old pilot who’s missing for 10 months after a visit with her family at their home on Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. He was flying his own plane from the North Pole to Homer on October 9, 1992, and disappeared en route. Journal entries of Tim and Cynthia’s father are included, giving more perspectives for this autobiography.
I find Gravity’s Embrace a fascinating yet heartbreaking read. Cynthia’s skill as a writer heightens the emotional roller coaster that her family had to endure while searching for Tim to a great extent. The subject matter can be hard to digest, and the question “How can a person disappear just like that?” often arises in my head.
This autobiography also chronicles the family background, particularly Tim’s, and as a reader I feel connected to him. Conversely, in Cynthia’s own words, “Tim was a quiet person by nature. I never really knew what he was thinking. Once in a while he would grace me with a few of his thoughts, but mostly kept them to himself.” Tim’s journal entries contain great personal insight about the man. Cynthia also encodes a powerful message to anyone who ever lost their loved ones in life: find the strength to carry on. There are some questions still left unanswered, nevertheless Gravity’s Embrace is insightful, engrossing and poignant.
