A little boy loves playing with his Grandpa. Who wouldn’t? He loves it when Grandpa embraces him in a hug. Then picks him up and lifts him high so he feels like he’s touching the clouds, the sky, even the sun. With a cry of sudden fear, the boy calls down to Grandpa and he is slowly lowered to the ground and into another compassionate hug. It’s no wonder the boy thinks of his Grandpa as an elevator. Every time they play together, it’s the same thing, up and down, with Grandpa holding tight.
Kathleen Mannion’s picture book story, Grandpa is my Elevator, is a charming tale about a little boy and his very special Grandpa. “Grandpa is my elevator,/ he has a special way./ He takes me up and down,/ I could ride all day.” A sweet way to introduce the story, which continues to follow along in the same lilting, rhyming verse of the opening lines. With colorful illustrations to help carry the story along, young readers will enjoy the little boy’s adventures with his Grandpa and the fun they have together playing elevator. Up and down goes the little boy as his imagination sees no limits, certainly not with the fun he shares with Grandpa. The beauty of this story is the special bond clearly depicted in the loving hugs shared at the beginning of the elevator ride and at the end. There’s nothing quite so powerful as a bond between a child and one, or both, of their grandparents. A beautiful story told with care and compassion to warm the hearts of young and old alike.
