Grandmothers are very special people. Gems, really; diamonds. They create a special bond, especially with their young granddaughters, sharing stories, teaching, learning, just being together, and doing things together. Spending time with a beloved grandmother is a treasure trove of memories in the making. That’s how it was for Judy. She shared a cherished bond with her grandmother, one that she carried with her into her adult years. And now she’s a grandmother, passing on that special bond to her own grandchildren. And, the symbol of this bond is a rusty old tin box, which she kept tucked under the bed: first Judy’s grandmother’s bed and then her own. It’s a treasure chest of miscellaneous items including an elegant gold pin covered in diamonds and blue gems, “that sparkled and glittered, just like her grandmother’s blue eyes.” There was a missing diamond from the center, but that’s part of the story, too. The items in the tin box were intended to inspire stories to be shared, special moments to be cherished.

Judith M. Ackerman’s picture book story, Grandmother’s Tin Box, is a treasure chest of its own, a sweet and endearing story that tugs at the heartstrings in the same style as Robert Munch’s beloved children’s story, Love You Forever. The plot develops with the growing love between a grandmother and her granddaughter and the precious memories they create together. The tin box is full of things, but these things are stories and memorabilia of love passed on from one generation to the next. The colorful illustrations are charming, adding to the charming quality of this children’s story. Having enjoyed a similarly powerful bond with my own grandmother, this story certainly speaks to me profoundly. I loved it! As for the missing diamond from the gold pin? Well, read the story and find out.
