Have you ever had a green cake? No, not a mint cake, but a green cake, one made with pistachios. That’s right, pistachios, also “called the happy nut because they smile at you.” Well, at least that’s what Grandma says. She’s visiting Shani for the summer and they’re baking a cake together – a pistachio cake. Grandma is a special someone in Shani’s life: she smells good, she’s fun to be around and she’s smart. Even when the finished cake falls on the chair and Shani thinks the cake is history, Grandma knows just what to do.

Shani T. Night’s picture book story, Grandma’s Visit and Pistachio Cake, is another one of Shani’s series of adventure stories with her friends and family. This time the adventure centers around Grandma’s visit and the pistachio cake. I’ve never had pistachio cake. Have you? But what fun Shani and Grandma have making this cake and sharing stories. That’s what one does with a special Grandma. The plot follows Shani’s excitement about summer, what she loves to do in the summer, Grandma’s visit, and the highlight: making the cake. The language is simple so a beginner reader can easily follow along and perhaps even read it themselves. The illustrations are bold and colorful, with lots of wonderful facial expressions, which help to move the story along. This is another fun Shani story, meant to entertain and delight, with morsels of humor that will definitely make you laugh. There is nothing quite so special as the bond between a grandmother and her granddaughter.
