Good Girls on Bad Drugs: Addiction Nonfiction of the Unhappy Hookers by Mark Mathew Braunstein is a true story. Set near to two of the largest casinos, this is the tale of the girl-next-door, the women who become hooked on heroin, coke, crack and opioids, and who turn to prostitution to support their habits. Street walking or internet escorting, it’s all the same – it pays for the habit. The story is made up of a mixture of interviews with the girls and journals written while in jail. There are no hidden sides – the girls spill it all. Twenty-two lives, all affected. The girls are no strangers to AIDS, murder, and overdoses – 3 of the girls were killed by Johns, 4 of them died of an overdose, one of whom was just 17 years old and whose death opened the door on a prostitution ring. One was involved in murder, one got away from prison and was hunted down, while yet another was a bank robber. Be prepared to be shocked by what you read and by the photos. Be prepared to enter a world you may never have known existed.
Good Girls on Bad Drugs: Addiction Nonfiction of the Unhappy Hookers by Mark Mathew Braunstein is an incredibly candid and open story. True stories are some of the best and this is one of the most detailed I have ever read. There are no holds barred and although there are no real sexual descriptions, you just know from reading that it happened. The addition of the photos makes the book even more real and gives you something to truly identify with while reading. Mr. Braunstein has a unique style of writing, a way that draws you gently into the story and then grips you tight. He isn’t letting you go until you understand the girls, understand what happened to them, and why. He isn’t letting you go until you realize that, much as we may turn the other cheek and ignore what we don’t see, these things are happening, right here, right now, and right under our noses. Terrific book, highly recommended for all true crime aficionados and maybe for anyone who wants a dose of the realities of life.
