God & Other Poems: Final Poems by Paul Carroll is a heartrending collection of poems where readers get to see the poet working through his feelings of surrender, satire, sleep, rest, confession, death, and much more of the memories and dreams of the poet. The poems throw light on Paul Carroll, the person, and they give pleasure to readers and act as the poet’s hand, offering strength, hope, and faith. The poems are reflections of his enthusiasm, candor, humor, boldness, vitality of character, and various moods that radiate like heat. Written during a time when he knew he was not going to live for long, this collection of poems merges the physical world with the world of memories and dreams, giving it a unique voice.
For all those who love poetry, this collection is a good one to read as it takes them through the diverse emotions experienced while living. The few pictures in the book help readers connect with the poet in many dimensions. All the poems have something to convey to readers, but I found ‘Appalachian Spring’ very deep and insightful and ‘Song’ takes readers on a walk with the poet, revealing his inner self. What I found fascinating in these two poems is the nonchalant manner in which the poet gives the soul a color and calls the sun ‘fierce green,’ breaking the mould of terming it yellow, or shades of yellow. All the poems will make readers want to read them again and again, to get a different layer of meaning each time they read, opening their eyes to the world, and filling them with a sense of beauty.
