Glissando by Debbie Burke is the story of Ellie Greenberg. Ellie was 23 years old when she fell in love with Rudy DeSantis and married him. However, that bliss was short-lived as Ellie caught him cheating and got divorced. Now Ellie was in her mid-fifties, and romance was a thing of the past. With her beloved whippet named Scotty by her side, Ellie was happy with her job and her community jazz band. She wasn’t expecting to fall hard for Vince Keyes, the new trumpet player with dazzling blue eyes and a winning smile. The problem: Vince was already married to a much younger woman. To distract herself, Ellie started to date Stan Feldman, her co-worker. A gentleman through and through, but Sam wasn’t Vince, and Ellie’s heart wasn’t listening to her. When push comes to a shove, will Ellie make a decision that is right for her?
I was not expecting the humor or the witty charm of Glissando by Debbie Burke. Ellie was a riot; wickedly smart and knew what she wanted from her life. I loved how she seemed to have low self-esteem, but the very next moment, she would become her biggest support. Ellie knew her worth and wouldn’t settle for anything less than what she deserved. Even if she was self-deprecating at some points, it just made her more human to me. The pace was fast, and Ellie’s growth was fast as well, but nothing was rushed to make the reader feel like they were missing something. Jaded and lovable characters make this story even more entertaining. Jazz plays a very important role in the story and is constantly in the background (I loved that). I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves a kick-ass female protagonist and plenty of humor to keep you smiling.
