In Give Me Chocolate by Annie Hansen, author Kelly Clark’s life is in pieces. She leaves California and returns to her hometown of Geneva, Illinois. Here she hopes to rebuild her life after a bad divorce from an abusive, homicidal husband. With limited income, she accepts her sister’s generous offer to live in the apartment above Chocolate Love, her sister’s specialty dessert shop located in the Historic District of Geneva. At first she has a hard time adjusting, but her daily runs and writing keep her going even on her worst days. Things slowly start to get better when she reconnects with an old high school sweetheart who has also recently returned to Geneva. Then things take a turn for the worse when she literally stumbles over a dead body. The death is ruled from natural causes, but to Kelly something just doesn’t seem right. A former friend from her past life in California suddenly arrives in town with a dire warning. Has Kelly’s violent past and the danger she faced in California followed her back to her old hometown?
This is a fast read and captures the reader’s attention from the very first chapter. The author did an excellent job of creating characters that are intriguing but real. The dialogue is realistic, particularly between siblings, and the descriptions were dramatic. The content of the story was concise and coherent. The organization of the story is well developed. The plot is well constructed and moves along at a good pace. I would classify this as a drama with some mystery thrown in. A nice enjoyable read.
