Al Bernard, Chief of Police in Moon Hill, Maine, remembers the time when a serial killer’s appearance shattered the serenity of the sleepy little town. Years later, a strange series of events ensues once again, coinciding with the arrival of a young man bearing a striking resemblance to the killer. When a long-time resident disappears without a trace, and two young boys meet a gruesome end, Al and her daughter, Deb, try to put together the puzzle pieces. The mystery thickens when Deb rescues a small child with unusual customs and no information on her parentage. Is there a logical explanation for these events? Or do the numerous stories of ghosts and hauntings peppering the town have some modicum of truth in them? Find out in Ghost Town by Kirsten Reed.

I fell in love with this atmospheric novel that stretched its boundaries from a quaint town to acres of woodlands, rising hills, and isolated caves, all of which had an important part to play. Kirsten Reed’s writing is surrealistic, engulfing her readers in a miasma of long-held secrets and folkloric beliefs, alluding to elements that were not entirely magical yet not quite real, something existing just beyond the reaches of our systematic lives and rational thoughts. I loved the depiction of how, throughout history, colonial rules and religious extremism have affected marginalized people, persecuting them to a state of almost non-existence. Enter into this mix a remorseless killer, a seemingly senile healer, an Indigenous ranger, a police chief sworn to secrecy, and a mysterious foundling tying two parallel worlds together, and you are in for an unforgettable tale. Ghost Town is a story of overcoming grief and trauma, finding one’s place in the world, and rediscovering forgotten roots.
