Ghalib’s Tomb and Other Poems, by Manash Bhattacharjee, is a beautiful collection of poems that explores the culture of India, the many muses of the poet, and the inner workings of the creative mind. Bhattacharjee’s collection is an excellent collection of poetry with each poem crafted carefully and uniquely. With reverence, he discusses the poets that have influenced him, such as Octavio Paz, Sappho, and Rainer Maria Rilke, and in the same breath discusses the hardships and/ or wonders of living in India. His poems are wide and varied, and this book will be both a breath of fresh air for experienced poetry readers and an excellent exploration in poetic form for anyone new to the art.
Manash Bhattacharjee paints picturesque landscapes and engages in musings upon deep and moving ideals from the very beginning of his book. His poetry will grab readers and pull them through to the very end. I was quite pleased to see the variety of forms that he chose to use, such as the ghazal, a complicated poetic form that the poet succeeds in doing well. His poems are full of surprising twists and turns, and reading the book in its entirety provides some pleasing surprises as well, since the poet makes the habit of producing a thought in one poem only to make it more complete in a later poem. Ghalib’s Tomb and Other Poems was an enjoyable collection that I highly recommend, and I hope to read more from this moving poet.
