Gertrude and the Magic Fish is a children’s book written by Angela Emily Neveins and illustrated by Mahfuja Selim. Once upon a time there a little old lady named Gertrude who lived at Avalon. It was a very nice place to live, but her family had grown up and left home, leaving her to live alone with her cat, Mr. Whiskers. They had a happy and contented life. Gertrude raised beautiful flowers and delicious fruit and took long walks. She was happy, but she missed her family. One day, when she was taking a walk by a peaceful stream, she was overcome with her emotions and began to cry. A fish swam by and discovered the old woman sobbing. After asking why, the fish became a cute little girl with bulging eyes. The child, Leeka, came to live with Gertrude, who loved and treated her like a granddaughter. After quite some time, Leeka began to miss her family. Gertrude encouraged her to return to the water and be a fish again. While Gertrude missed Leeka, she knew she had done the right thing.

Gertrude and the Magic Fish is a delightful read, demonstrating that sometimes you have to let go of the ones you love. The illustrations are beautifully done with bright colors. I love the way the illustrator created faces that conveyed the emotions of the characters. The story is cute and easy to understand. I would suggest this book for preschoolers and lower elementary students. This tale will be a nice addition to a child’s book shelf or a classroom shelf.
