Sometimes, our loved ones can get sick or suffer from an illness that takes time to recover from. Gentle Hugs by Lily Guzman is about a young boy who spends his days communicating and sharing with his beloved dog when his mother falls ill. Alex's mother is always smiling and happy, but for the past week, she hasn't been feeling well. Alex confesses to his loyal dog Nico that he feels sad when his mother is sick. He wishes she could play ball with them, but she has a fever. Still, Alex knows his mother loves them, as he remembers her making bubbles with him. His mother also can't go to the movies anymore, but when Alex returns from the theater, she plays puzzles with him. Alex realizes that there are better days to come.

Gentle Hugs is a beautiful story about love, empathy, and kindness. Lily Guzman has written a heartwarming tale highlighting the love between a mother and her young son. This picture book shows how the bond between a parent and their child has the power to overcome adversity through patience, love, and resilience. Guzman's characters are very likable, and the author does a masterful job of making them feel like real people in such a short story. Young readers will find it easy to identify with Alex and relate to his relationship with his mother. I also liked the bond between Alex and Nico, who I found to be very sweet and lovable. Dorota Rewerenda's lively illustrations add color to the pages and make the book even more engaging. All in all, it's a heartfelt story children and their parents can enjoy together.
